Kinesis History Contoured keyboard origins After extensive research, the first Kinesis Contoured ™ keyboard, the Model 100, was launched commercially in 1992. This product is patented in the U.S. and other countries worldwide.The Model 100 Contoured keyboard was the first production-model ergonomic keyboard in the United States which was based on a traditional letter layout. New manufacturing techniques were developed to facilitate the production of a keyboard which lacked any significant flat surface! The success of the Kinesis contoured keyboard in solving intractable RSI problems has been remarkable and unprecedented. Even more surprising, however, is the enhanced productivity and comfort for non-injured computer users which Contoured keyboards have been found to provide over many years of commercial use. Other innovations in office ergonomics Kinesis has also pioneered numerous other products in the field of ergonomic computer accessories, including the first general purpose foot switches supplementing keyboard input, the first adapter which allowed PC keyboards to connect to Macintosh computers, and also the first PS/2 keyboard adapter for Sun workstations. In 1996 Kinesis created a family of Contoured keyboards to better meet the diverse needs of its customers, including the first Mac/PC switchable and the first QWERTY/Dvorak switchable ergonomic keyboards. 1997 brought the launch of the Maxim adjustable keyboard for computer users seeking a less expensive and less exotic step up from Microsoft's "natural" style keyboard. In 1999 and 2000, continued expansion of the Kinesis product line added selected pointing devices, stand-alone programmable footswitches and keypads, and keyboard/mouse trays optimized for Kinesis keyboards. In 2001 the Kinesis keyboard line was expanded with introduction of the Kinesis Evolution fully-adjustable keyboard family which could be attached either to chair arms or to an under-desk arm. The Evolution keyboard was fully programmable like the contoured keyboards. In 2003 we added a line of Kinesis brand chairs which offer a remarkable feature set and moderate price. In 2004, we created the flexible Savant Elite family of programmable foot switches for activating mouse clicks as well as other over-used key actions. Freestyle keyboard and accessories Most recently, the development and launch of the new Freestyle convertible ergonomic keyboard has ushered in a new era in mainstream ergonomic keyboards. For the first time, one keyboard can serve the needs of every computer user in a corporation, whether or not they have an over-use problem.
